Easily one of the most progressive DJ’s in the world, Nicky Romero has reached back into the disco era to collaborate with one of the most influential artists of that generation on his appropriately titled new single “Future Funk”; the one and only Nile Rodgers! His signature funky guitar riffs and Romero’s lush, sonic-bending beats come together in one impeccable package. As part two of his three part trilogy, “Future Funk” is an exciting departure from the sweeping grandeur of “Lighthouse.”
To explain how natural this cross-genre collaboration was, just look to the beginning. The genesis of Rodgers’ contribution was found in the LA studio where the two began writing. While simply getting warmed up with his six string, he launched into a classically funky improv riff. Ever the deft producer, Nicky seized upon what he heard and instantly locked it into the groove of the song. From there, it was off to the races. The lyrics dive into a debaucherous world of excess and materialism, and in order to capture that vibe in a visual sense they knew they would have to really push the envelope with the “Future Funk” video. We’re happy to report mission accomplished!
Nicky’s “Lighthouse” video was presented as a part one of an ambitious music video trilogy. It was an impassioned clip focusing around a wheelchair-bound man confined both physically and mentally. While that clip left with a cliffhanger, most of us assumed part two would focus on the next chapter of the story. Instead, Nicky has flipped the script and used the video for “Future Funk” to paint a picture of how this man ended up in such dire straits. One look at “Future Funk” and you’ll quickly realize this story is as much a tale of regret as it is redemption.
The video takes place during the financial crash of the mid-00’s, as well as the “greed is good” era of Wall Street. As it turns out, the central character from “Lighthouse” used to be a hot-shot banker who was blindly motivated by money and power. His arrogance and hubris is legendary around his office as these power brokers try to top each other in dollar signs. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s actually legal or not, so long as they get their cut. Once the tables turn and the whole house of cards crumbles down, his coworkers are happy to see him led away in cuffs. One particularly disgruntled clients has a more sinister intent, and the correlation between these first two parts of the trilogy are set in motion.
