For many years the gents of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin have relentlessly made a name for themselves as a band that writes exceptional indie rock songs with infectious hooks and a simplistic approach to an often-gluttonous genre. Since 2004 the band has released new material almost every single year. It’s a blistering pace of production, and combined with their never-ending touring the band has made sure that their music, and not their quirky mouthful of a name, has been the thing that defines. That is, until Russia found out about them….

When the Boris Yeltsin Foundation-sponsored Old New Rock Festival in Ekaterinburg, Russia was looking for a headlining act, it was only appropriate that they tap Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (or SSLYBY for short) to become the first American act to ever perform there. The band was also named “ambassadors for a day” by the U.S. consulate in honor of the occasion. Not only did the band amaze fans at the festival, but they also performed songs from their latest offering, Fly By Wire, at an English-speaking school in Ekaterinburg. Of the entire experience, lead singer Philip Dickey says “People used to ask if Boris Yeltsin knew about us. This is the closest we’ve come to answering that. And the ambassador part. I hope I can use that on my resume – an ambassador for America for one day.” Fortunately for the rest of us, their longtime director Brook Linder tagged along to document the whole thing!

It begins with a newscast in Russian and quickly goes into a whirlwind documentation of the band in multiple performances at the Old New Rock Festival, and in a packed room at the school, as well all of the incredibly unique experiences you would hope to see any band get to enjoy. Of course we see all of the things we’d expect to see, photos and statues of Lenin, Putin, and of course, Yeltsin. The Kremlin and Red Square. Frigid January days and nights. But what we also see is that this indie-pop crew truly wins over every potential fan they encounter. The warmth and excitement with which the Russian audiences embrace the band is truly inspiring to watch, and is on point from the moment they touch down at the airport. The band takes it all in stride, embracing a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We are always proud and excited to be working with Polyvinyl Records to help spread the good word about one of our favorites, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.
