Aureate Gloom, the thirteenth full-length album by of Montreal, is one of the band’s most straightforward and thematically complex offerings. Kevin Barnes wrote and recorded in New York City, Athens, GA, and just outside of El Paso, using these songs as an opportunity to come to terms with a very tumultuous period in his life. But while many artists will speak in vague phrases and hint at the true meaning, Barnes hides nothing, laying it all out on the table for the audience to share in his experience.
While working at a breakneck pace and doing his best to capture the moments as they happened, Barnes says “I might be guilty of sharing or exposing too much of my private life, but to me the best albums are those that help people connect with an artist on a deep, human level and that do so without too much artifice or evasiveness.”
Recording to tape with his touring band also allowed Barnes to capture a palpable energy and musical rapport that was developed over many months of touring together. The energy remains high for “Last Rites At The Jane Hotel,” which channels Barnes’ innermost T. Rex while staying true to of Montreal’s signature song structure.
The video for “Last Rites At The Jane Hotel” brings of Montreal back into their wonderful world of animated music videos. It should go without saying that the video looks absolutely fantastic. Where this one differs from the animated catalog in the past is that while many of the animated videos of the past have been based off the elaborate, kaleidoscopic art of David Barnes, Kevin’s brother and longtime architect of the band’s visuals, director Matthew Cooper uses a more straightforward mix of solid colors and shapes to tell this story. Skeletons ride bikes through the land, faces are pulled off like living masks, a band of rabbits rock the stage, a cat with a mime’s face run through the halls of the Jane Hotel. This is just a taste of the big picture. As expected, it’s quite a trip and there are many layers to this video, just like we’ve come to love and expect from of Montreal.
It’s always an honor to be able to bring new videos from of Montreal to our programmers, and we know this will be one of your favorites! The band will be on tour through November and we encourage you to get out and see this band live!
