Greetings fellow music video lovers! It’s Andy Gesner and the HIP Video Promo staff serving up another infectious video from the unstoppable dance-pop duo known as Goldfrapp. The video for “Alive” carries out Goldfrapp’s latest obsession with all things eighties, which is appropriately so since the synth-y single is filled with retro beaming sounds that back up Alison Goldfrapp’s empowering vocals as she sings, “I’m feeling alive again.”
In this video, it’s not just Alison’s voice that is filled with power. From the get-go, she is singled out as a leader standing atop her distinguished platform and overlooking a group of slightly demonic-looking men dressed in black cloaks. The next thing you know, a dance sequence breaks out, and Alison in all her eighties glory – big hair and a vibrantly colored outfit included – summons women dancers dressed in spandex via tacky visual effects of laser beams coming out of Alison’s hands. She helms these dancers to perform the way she wants atop a huge pentagram on the floor.
There’s a bit of an unexpected twist when you realize that Alison is actually a queen vampire when she directs her fellow women vampires to bite into the demonic looking men. Count on Goldfrapp to take the ever-popular vampire trend to a whole other level while leaving out the gore and interpreting the chorus in this way – all while maintaining their glam rock persona visually and musically.
“Alive” is the second single off of Goldfrapp’s critically praised fifth album, Head First. SPIN.com noted that this latest single “wears its influences proudly, flaunting the shimmery squiggles that denoted muse-y magic in Xanadu.” And though this English electronic duo’s styles have continuously varied throughout their decade-long careers, it always comes down to Goldfrapp’s multi-layered synths and Alison’s chilling voice, as evidenced in “Alive.”
