Hello fellow music video lovers, it’s Andy Gesner and the gang from HIP Video Promo bringing you a real eye opener! “The first day of summer will never be the same” – or so goes Essex Chanel’s motto for their latest video “Skinny Dippin’.” Such a title may give the impression that you’re in for something a bit creepy and uncomfortable when, in fact, it’s the complete opposite. What you have in front of you is a clip that is simply lighthearted and silly – perfectly matching the catchy and surprisingly charming song in its own.
In terms of the video, there is only so much one can expect from a tune titled “Skinny Dippin’.” But somehow, the Chicago-based Essex Chanel still manages to put their very own fun twist to it. The video follows Essex Chanel fans in different everydaylife scenarios in the Windy City. Whether biking at Oak Street Beach, photocopying in the office or trying to unclog a ketchup bottle at Friar Tuck’s, each fan gets interrupted amidst their task and finds a message. That message: “Go skinny dippin’ in the pool.” The next thing you know, the band members and other Essex Chanel fans jump in the pool stripped down, synchronized swimming ensues and then a blow-up doll literally kills the fun by shooting at everyone and eventually escaping. It’s the kind of pool party that you wish you had gotten an invitation to up until you realize that maybe it’s best you hadn’t gone.
Of course, you’re wondering how far Essex Chanel has gone with the nudity. There’s nothing vulgar and things have been properly blurred. In actuality, the amusing censorship plays as its own character in the video, and it is hardly the main focal point. Besides, you’ll find yourself entranced by the song’s fun lyrics and upbeat melody, complete with trumpet and violin arrangements.
You can look to Essex Chanel’s frontman Travis Lee Wiggins as the creative driving force behind “Skinny Dippin’” and all things involving the band. We say this because Wiggins is not only a multi-instrumentalist, he is an all-around talent whose roles include songwriter, producer and engineer on top of dabbling in the packaging of Essex Chanel and the band’s website design. Wiggins literally goes beyond writing and performing, but that’s not to say he’s alone in his venture as he’s enlisted 10 other Chicago musicians to help him out in the studio and during live performances since releasing Essex Chanel’s eighth album, Love Is Proximity, in addition to three additional LPs aptly titled Love Is Proximity Sessions.
When it comes down to it, Essex Chanel is a cross-genre band helmed by Wiggins whose concentration is consistently on the interplay of melodies. “Skinny Dippin’” is a prime example of such, and if you’re itching for more, you can download all of Essex Chanel’s albums (11 albums, 249 songs) at their official website for free in 2010, or visit popular online outlets such as iTunes or Amazon.com. Not only is Essex Chanel a terrific band but they are also an incredibly generous bunch!
