Sure, the members of the HIP Video Promo team love streaming as much as the next person: it’s remarkable to be able to access almost any song you want, at any time, from anywhere! But as real music junkies, we know there’s nothing like listening to an artist or record that you love on vinyl – and we’re lucky enough to have a turntable right at HIP HQ.
We’re spinning a different record every day, and over on the HIP Video Promo Instagram, we’ve shared some of our favorites in our Turntable Tuesday series. Today, we’re happy to share a round-up of these Turntable Tuesdays posts, bragging about all the cool records we get to listen to at the office. Take a seat, put on your headphones, and enjoy!
Up first, on January 10, we listened to Beautiful Noise by Major Spark. The Boston duo – Mark Goodman and producer Brian Charles – released their debut album back in 2021, and in 2022 we had the pleasure of promoting two videos from the release, “Run Run Run” and “Beautiful Noise.” We worked with them again several months later, promoting “Birds Aren’t Real.” Beautiful Noise is a must-listen for anyone intrigued by “a stirring amalgam of garage rock, power pop, psychedelia, and synth-drenched textural soundscapes” – and we appreciate this gorgeous kelly green vinyl as well!

For our next Turntable Tuesday, on January 24, we turned to an old favorite: The Shins. Indie rockers everywhere in the early 2000s were floored by this band’s debut album Oh, Inverted World  in 2001, and we were thrilled to team up to promote the video for “The Past And Pending”. One solid record just wasn’t enough and we were thrilled to team up with The Shins again to promote “So Says I” and “Kissing The Lipless” from their follow-up album, Chutes Too Narrow, released on the legendary Sub Pop in 2003. It’s hard to believe it’s already been twenty years since Chutes Too Narrow was released, and it was quite the thrill revisiting this classic indie album!

Rounding out January’s spins is another revolutionary indie record. HIP has long had the pleasure of partnering with Saddle Creek for their exciting new video releases, and in 2017 we were thrilled to work with Brooklyn band Big Thief to promote “Mythological Beauty.” The video is truly stunning, coming from their highly-anticipated (and very well-received) sophomore album, Capacity. It was a true pleasure listening to Capacity at HIP HQ on January 31!

Many would say the best compliment a client can give a company is repeat business. Indie group of Montreal is a fantastic example of this: dating back to 2005 with their video for “Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games”, we’ve now promoted fifteen of their videos in all! As prolific as they’ve been with their video releases, of Montreal have a similar output when it comes to their studio albums: they’ve released a whopping eighteen studio albums to date. In 2020, they released album sixteen, UR FUN, on legendary independent label Polyvinyl Records. We were delighted to promote the videos for “Get God’s Attention By Being An Atheist” and “Polyaneurism” that February, and three years later, on February 7 this year, it was a delight to spin this eye-catching cherry red copy of UR FUN.

“They Made Frogs Smoke Til They Exploded”: we can hardly imagine a more eye-catching song title, and múm matched that impressive innovation in the matching music video, which we had the pleasure of promoting in August 2007. Two years later, we’d team up with them again for the “SING ALONG” release. Go Go Smear The Poision Ivy was the title of this Icelandic group’s breakthrough album. On February 14, the HIP crew enjoyed reminiscing about all things múm by giving it a listen.

From her native Hawaii to her current home in Los Angeles comes rising popstar Jasmine Crowe. HIP had the delight of working with her for the first time in 2018 with her “Breaking Things” video, and again in 2022 with her “Poolside” collab with Jonathan Fairchild, and in January of this year for her “The Shirt Song” video. This artist never stops creating, and her album Symptoms, released in 2019, is one you won’t want to miss. We enjoyed listening to the vinyl on February 21!

It’s been almost twenty years since we promoted The Thermals’ video for “How We Know” in 2004. Four years later, we promoted their “Returning To The Fold” video. But the greatest artists, you’ll never forget – and The Thermals are one that certainly stick out in our memory! “How We Know” comes from the band’s second full-length album F*ckin’ A – and we think the songs are as explosive as the artwork on the front. This one was a pleasure to jam on March 7.

HIP first had the pleasure of working with White Reaper in 2014 to promote their “Cool” video. Just a few years later, in 2017, we teamed up with the indie rockers again for the killer “Judy French” video, which starred Alexandra Daddario of Baywatch and San Andreas fame. “Judy French” came from their album The World’s Best American Band – a bold claim to make, but one that’s hard to disagree with! On April 11, we spun The World’s Best American Band on our turntable.

It was February 2020 when we first worked with Disq to promote two music videos: “Loneliness” and “Daily Routine”, the latter of which made waves on mtvU and MTV Spankin’ New! The next summer, we promoted the video for “Gentle”; all three of these songs come from the group’s debut album Collector. Another Saddle Creek  release, it’s no surprise the HIP crew enjoyed listening to the Collector vinyl on April 18.

Sometimes we work with an artist early in their career, and it’s years before we partner with them again. Such is the case with The Rocket Summer. We first worked with Bryce Avary way back in 2003 to promote the video for “Skies So Blue” from his debut album, Calendar Days. As fans of emo and alternative music we have eagerly followed The Rocket Summer’s career, and it is a true honor to collaborate with him once again to promote “M4U” from the brand new album, Shadowkasters. On May 2, we were thrilled to spin Shadowkasters on vinyl!
