Can you believe we’re nearly halfway through April? The temperatures are finally rising and the sun is out, and what a joy this week has been. Music truly is a language that transcends all cultural barriers, and this weeks HIP Picks has artists from the US, Russia, and India! The newest HIP Picks – Weekly Client Roundup video gives you the low-down on some of our current projects, and we’ll tell you a little bit about each one below.
When he was seven years old, Dhruv Visvanath began playing the piano after his mother told him “women fawn over pianists.” From there, he picked up the acoustic guitar and then the electric – which fit perfectly in line with his newfound obsession with metal music. “Wild”, the new single from his album The Lost Cause, is a gripping humanistic tale of a heart in search of freedom; it sounds like what you might get if Bon Iver became a guitar virtuoso, traveled the world (as Dhruv did – after growing up in New Delhi, he lived in major cities like Hong Kong and London in his teenage years), and developed an Indian soul. The music video for “Wild” is a captivating look at isolation through the eyes of a living, breathing mop, and it’s sure to tug on your heart strings.
From Philly to Los Angeles, Kate Faust is a rare pop artist who can look trouble in the face without flinching, and report back with absolute honesty. She’s lent her voice to artists ranging from avant-jazz saxophonist Adam Turchin to electronic producer Osage to afro-futurist Fhloston Paradigm, and has also released several EPs of her own daring, poetic pop. “Trouble” comes from her latest EP, Savior, and the video both reinforces the sense of unease that the track generates (Kate’s face is often occluded) and underscores its beauty.
Nashville-based singer/songwriter Raquel Aurilia has been on a journey since 2004, when she first dipped her toes in music with the help of producer Tony Papa. She’s since gone on a 25 date US tour opening for John Waite; opened for other legends like B.B. King, Gin Blossoms, Kenny Loggins, Lisa Loeb, Eddie Money, Pat Benatar and Riders In The Sky; and had her music featured on MTV’s hit series The Hills, The City, and Taking The Stage. Her new single “Pretty Roses” was released on Valentine’s Day, though ahead of the official release she performed it live on Today In Nashville. “Pretty Roses” is a love song, but it’s the kind that will break your heart, as the video shows a middle-aged man bringing a bouquet of “Pretty Roses” to a cemetery, holding onto hope that he and his deceased love will be together again some day.
If you’re familiar with Eastern European pop culture, Alex Sparrow needs no introduction: he’s been on the Russian version of The Bachelor, taken the prize on Dancing With The Stars, had success on the X-Factor, and played lead roles in over twenty movies. Now, this Russian-born star is ready to take his unique collection of talents to the United States. We’ve got three videos from Alex Sparrow to share. “She’s Crazy But She’s Mine” is a breezy yet propulsive track with a mischievous clip that he directed himself, showing him in a prankster duel with his girlfriend; “Got Me Good” shows school children up to their own antics and trading stunts; and “Again And Again” amps up the danger, Mr. And Mrs. Smith-style, ending with both lovers in traction.
