Greetings to everyone in the music video world! It’s Andy Gesner and the staff from HIP Video Promo with another cool band to bring to your attention. Here at HIP we have fallen in love with The Organ – though we realize this hardly makes us unique. Since the release of Grab That Gun, their stunning debut, the Canadian quintet has been winning hearts all over the North American continent and the U.K. The outfit – five young women, each with distinctive and personal instrumental voices – has been an indie sensation north of the border almost since the frontwoman Katie Sketch put the band together. It’s our pleasure to help introduce The Organ to the wider American audience they deserve.

Sketch and her bandmates are upfront about the influences on Grab That Gun: classic British alt-rock and homegrown dream-pop. If Sketch’s vocal inflections are reminiscent of those of Morrissey and his most bemused, guitarist Debora Cohen draws on the entire 120 Minutes songbook. Shades of Johnny Marr, Steve Kilbey, Daniel Ash, Kristen Hersh and the rest of the left-of-the-dial six-string legends of the mid-Eighties are all apparent in her fluid playing. The Organ rhythm section knows its way around the Rough Trade catalog too, and drummer Shelby Stocks and bassist Shmoo play with the energy and jump of Head On The Door-era Cure. Unsurprisingly, British audiences and rock critics went mad for the quintet on their recent U.K. tour. Even the notoriously-fickle NME was gaga: Barry Nicholson wrote that The Organ has “an uncanny ability to make you dance like you’re got a bouquet of tulips hanging out your arse.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Fans of Showtime’s The L Word have likely heard “Brother”, the lead song on Grab That Gun – it was aired on the show and featured on its popular soundtrack. “Love, Love, Love” manages to be similarly cinematic, and even more barbed and ambiguous. Sketch sings about love the way Morrissey (the “Steven Smith” of the Organ song of the same name) once did – as an illicit substance shared between desperate people in the underside of the city. “He’s had love in damp alleys/ in city hall, in city libraries/ we smoked it underneath the playground slide”, she purrs, before adding, ruefully, “why did i try?”

In her clip for “Love, Love, Love” director Samara Liu allows us into the world of the Organ, and it’s no doubt someplace we’d all like to visit. Barefoot and (mostly) bare-legged, the women sit together on a large leather sofa in a dimly lit room. They could be backstage, or they could be in somebody’s den; in either case, there’s a slumber-party vibe to the footage that often verges on playful eroticism (Katie Sketch’s “Jenny Loves Me” T-shirt only deepens the intrigue). The singer holds the remote control, and the bandmembers watch footage of themselves in concert. But Sketch isn’t really paying attention; instead, she croons in the general direction of the camera. She’s already mastered the art of appearing aloof and yet still somehow approachable, and here she employs it to provocative effect – even stopping for awhile to sing her disaffected lyrics into the ears of her canine companion.
