Greetings cherished programmers! It’s Andy Gesner and the indefatigable crew at HIP Video Promo, embracing the fall of 2010 after what proved to be an incredible summer of music video goodness! One of the big highlights of 2010 so far has been the opportunity to give well deserved exposure to Nuke The Soup, a Maryland based quintet that has made a full commitment to music video as one of the best ways to spread the musical message. So throughout the year, every three months, the band has released a new video, and it is time for number three within the triptych!

When we first met Mark Davison, this spring, he was flying solo with his acoustic guitar in the endearing Nuke The Soup video “Yin and Yang”. The summer brought us the conceptual, action packed “Filled With Dread”, a perfect warm weather ode with a compelling story line that neither featured Davison or his talented band. In “Blind”, the followup to “Yin and Yang” and “Filled With Dread”, we not only get to see Davison again, but his musical kindred spirits as well!

Great songs drive contemporary music, and Mark Davison of Nuke The Soup is a terrific songwriter. He’s a sure hand with a well-crafted melody, a fine, thought-provoking lyricist, and a composer of instantly-memorable choruses. For almost ten years — and four LPs — the vehicle for Davison’s songwriting was the whip-smart Cubic Feet, a Baltimore band with a national following. Superconnector, the band’s 2001 release, won plaudits for its imaginative arrangements, it’s intriguing subject matter, and Davison’s poised, confident performances. Sure enough, almost ten years later and due to popular demand, these compelling songs will be available once again when the band’s material from that time period is released in 2011 to a brand new generation of potential fans.

Cubic Feet was an outstanding combo: versatile, ambitious, sensitive to the many nuances of Davison’s writing. But it’s no overstatement to say that Davison has assembled his best band yet — one that brings the songwriter’s vision to life in vivid color. Nuke The Soup guitarist Rennie Grant complements Davison’s own six-string with rare empathy. Bassist Mike Mennell’s imaginative parts are practically counterpoints to Davison’s inventive melodies. Brian Simms contributes scalding organ and spacey synthesizer, adding character and class. And on drums, the duties are split on the record between a genuine legend Chester Thompson (Frank Zappa, Genesis) and Keith Cronin (Pat Travers), who does the honors of laying down the beat for “Blind”.

Make no mistake about it; “Blind” is a love song and an honest, no frills look at Davison and his musical com padres strutting their stuff in a confident stride. Seasoned musicians don’t need fancy lights or pyrotechnics to get their point across, instead the men of Nuke The Soup opt for a more austere setting within a mansion filled environment with nothing but love emanating from every angle. “Blind” delves into the reality of true love by realistically expressing one man’s tendency to forget why he loved, only to grasp glimpses of it now and again.

We’re excited that we have the pleasure of working with Nuke The Soup once again.
